Sworn Translation Requirements for the Spanish Consulates
Foreign documents in a language other than Spanish that are submitted to any of the Spanish consulates must likely be translated to Spanish. It is important to note that translations submitted to the Spanish consulates must be sworn translations. This means that the translations must follow the translation laws of the government of Spain. If they do not follow this standard, the documents are likely to be rejected. In today’s article, we will discuss what a sworn translation is and what kind of documents require it.
A sworn translation is completed by a translator that is authorized by the Spanish government. A sworn translator must pass through a rigorous multi-step examination process in order to receive the title. Sworn translators can be certified in multiple languages, and each language requires a separate certification process. A sworn translation is accepted within the territory of Spain or at any of the Spanish consulates.
Documents that are submitted to the Spanish consulates that are in English or another language typically require a sworn translation. Common documents that require a sworn translation include birth certificates, apostilles, death certificates and marriage certificates. The sworn translation will include all of the information that is included in the original document.
It is important to remember that documents submitted to the Spanish consulates that are not in Spanish must be translated by a sworn translator. Following all of the rules of the consulate will ensure a smooth process and avoid delays or rejected documents. When applying for any consular process, it is important to keep timelines in mind. In this case, there is a deadline to apply for Spanish citizenship under the Democratic Memory Law, October 2025, and after that point, it will not be possible to apply for Spanish citizenship, unless the Spanish government enacts a new law or extends the current one.
